SMRP GRANT

Sustainable Materials Recovery Program Grant

Sustainable Braintree’s Recycling Task Force remains committed to its mission of improving recycling at Town events, parks and playgrounds.

With a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Sustainable Materials Recovery Program, Sustainable Braintree purchased 75 recycling barrels for use at Town events throughout the year. These barrels replaced the cardboard receptacles that Sustainable Braintree used in prior years.

The SMRP Grant has also funded the purchase 30 recycling barrels for use at ball fields and playgrounds. Sustainable Braintree is hopeful that in the near future a sustainable collection procedure can be successfully implemented in the Town and is actively lobbying for recycling in our public parks to become reality.

RELAY FOR LIFE

Braintree, Milton, Quincy and Randolph come together in early June for the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life. This overnight fundraiser and celebration of life involves a few thousand people at Braintree High School’s track for about 18 hours. We have provided recycling boxes for them the past two years to keep cans and bottles out of the waste stream.

SPREADING THE WORD

The Recycling Task Force has created several displays for the Thayer Public Librarywindow cases in the entrance.

The Farmers Market held an Earth Festival in September 2011
with displays from all four Sustainable Braintree Task Forces. The
Recycle Task Force hosted a children’s Recycling Bingo, gave
out Single Stream information, and more.

At the “Peace, Love, Recycle” Festival at one of the Farmers Markets in 2010, Recycle Task Force members organized activities, games and shared information in the community tent. A free drawing was held for a compost bin donated by Jeff Kunz.

TRASH TALKS

Co-chairs of the Recycling Task Force, Eileen Campbell and Linda Chapman, make presentations to school and civic organizations about the astonishing variety of items we can recycle in Single Stream.

The collection of recyclable items provides strong visual cues for the audience, not to mention the witty banter! Eileen and Linda will answer you recycling questions, and if they don’t know the answer, they’ll find it for you.

Many people have told us they would recycle more if they had a better place to gather items in their homes before they go out to the curb. Recently we have updated this presentation to include suggestions for containers or places in the home that solve this problem.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY

Make A Difference Day is a national day of helping other people, held each year on the fourth Saturday in October.

In Braintree, we participate by holding a collection at Town Hall for new and gently used goods for a variety of local nonprofit organizations. Janice Weitbrecht organizes the event, and Sustainable Braintree staffs it. For the date, time, list of participants and what to bring, click here.

INDEPENDENCE DAY

Each year the Town celebrates our nation’s Independence Day the Saturday before the Fourth of July.  A festive parade through town ends at the high school where there is a midway with carnival rides and games, live music on a stage, and special activities or presentations.

For the past three years, the Recycling Task Force has provided recycling boxes, courtesy of Capital Waste, beside every trash can on the grounds, to collect cans and bottles.
